Safe Patient Care

Hesse Rural Health provides care as a ‘Mixed Ward’ at our Hospital in Winchelsea.

Under the Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient Ratios) Act 2015 and Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient Ratios) Amendment Acts 2019 and 2020, as a Level 4 public hospital and public aged residential care service under the Victorian Health Services Act 1988, Hesse Rural Health has obligations to publish applicable information in relation to Mixed Ward nursing ratios for each 6 month period.

Total number of occupied beds available is 4 (Acute) and 24 (Public High Level Residential Aged Care).

The expected number for this Mixed Ward calculation in the following 6 months (based on previous 12 months data and any likely factors) is 25 (1 x Acute and 24 Public High Level Residential Aged Care).

In compliance with the Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient Ratios) Amendment Act 2019 and 2020, we roster nurses according to the following:

  • Morning shift is 1 nurse: 5 patients
  • Afternoon shift is 1 nurse: 7 patients
  • Night shift is 1 nurse: 13 patients
